19th Singapore Physics Olympiad (SPhO) Competition 2006

A total of 15 junior colleges participated in this prestiguous Competition. From the turnout of more than 190 participants, there were a total of 7 Gold medallists.

The prize presentation ceremony was held at the seminar room at the Micron Plant ( Singapore) on 31 Jan 2007. A total of 7 gold medals, 8 silver medals and 11 bronze medals, 23 honorable mentions and 144 certificates of participation were awarded during the ceremony. The 7 Gold Medalists are: Li Haoyi (Anglo-Chinese School Independent); Wang Tengyao, Xu Zhihong (Hwa Chong Institution); Huang Hai Liu Hao Hui, Sun Chengbin and Yak Xin Yang (Raffles Junior College).

18th Singapore Physics Olympiad (SPhO) Competition 2005

More than 200 students from 15 junior colleges participated in the Competition: 6 golds, 9 silvers and 13 bronze and 26 honourable mentions were awarded. Golds: from Hwa Chong Junior College: Di Junwei, Low Guang Hao, Shi Zhiming, Wang Yifeng, from Raffles Junior College: Chuah Yuxin, Ho Wen Wei.


17th Singapore Physics Olympiad (SPhO) Competition 2004

200 students from 15 junior colleges participated in the 1st theorectical test and 40 students were selected for the 2nd and 3rd round experimental test. 6 golds, 9 silvers and 16 bronze and 22 honourable menrions were awarded. Golds: from Hwa Chong Junior College: Zhao Chong, Wong Da Wei, from Anglo-Chinese Junior College: Jonathan Ng Wei Xiang, from Raffles Junior College: Chu Ni hong, Nguyen Van Hoai Chau, Hong Wen Xian.


16th Singapore Physics Olympiad (SPhO) Competition 2003

The Singapore Physics Olympiad Committee 2003-2004 comprised the following members: Asst. Prof. Kwek Leong Chuan (NIE/NTU), Dr Roland Su (ITU/NUS), Asst. Prof. Edward Teo, Asst. Prof. Sow Chorng Haur (Physics/NUS) and Mr. Wee Keng Yong (Science Branch, MOE). This event was jointly organized by the Institute of Physics, Singapore in conjunction with the MOE, NUS, NIE and NTU.

An island-wide selection theory test for the Singapore Physics Olympiad this year was held on 27 October 2003 in LT 31 at the NUS. For the first time, this event was sponsored by Micron Technology Foundation, Inc. A total of 154 participants from 12 junior colleges in Singapore participated in the event. The examiners for the theory competition were Asst. Prof. Edward Teo and Asst. Prof. Kwek Leong Chuan. The theory test comprised four long questions (free response) on various topics based on the syllabus spelt out by the International Physics Olympiad Committee. The duration of the test was four hours (1 pm to 5 pm)

Based on the results of the theory test, forty students were selected for the experimental test on 8 November 2003 which was held in the Physics Conference Room at the NUS from 9 am till 1.30 pm. Asst. Professor Sow Chorng Haur was the chief examiner for the experimental round. Based on the results of the competition, 56 winners were declared: 9 Golds, 11 Silvers, 16 Bronze and 20 Honorable mentions.


15th Singapore Physics Olympiad Competition 2002

The 15th Singapore Physics Olympiad, jointly organized by IPS, NUS, NTU (NIE) and MOE, was held on 28 Oct 2002 (theory round) and 5 Nov 2002 (experimental round). A total of 179 students from 14 Junior Colleges participated in the competition. Raffles Junior College led by Yang Bo, Lin Kai and Yin Ying won the SPhO Challenge Trophy. A total of 9 gold medals, 14 silver medals, 14 bronze medals and 14 Honorable mentions were awarded. The Science Olympiad Presentation ceremony was held on 5 Dec 2002 at the NUS LT 31.


14th Singapore Physics Olympiad Competition 2001

The Fourteenth Singapore Physics Olympiad, jointly organized by IPS, NUS, NTU (NIE) and MOE, was held on 24 October 2001 (theory round) and 31 October 2001 (experimental round). A total of 192 students from 15 Junior Colleges participated in the competition. Raffles Junior College led by Nicholas Tham, Liu Chang and Zhang Yuxi won the SPho Challenge Trophy. A total of 50 medals and honorable mentions (9 gold medals, 11 silver medals, 16 bronze medals and 14 Honorable mentions) were awarded. Prof. Chong Chi Tat was the guest of honor for the Science Olympiad Presentation ceremony which was held on 1 December 2001 at the MOE auditorium.


13th Singapore Physics Olympiad Competition 2000

The Thirteenth Olympiad, jointly organised by IPS, NUS and MOE, was held on 28 October (Theory paper) and 8 November (Experimental paper) 2000. It drew 165 contestants from 14 junior colleges. Hwa Chong Junior College won the SPhO Challenge Trophy and 6 Gold Medals were awarded to the following participants: Gu Pan (HCJC), Joel Goh Weiqiang (ACJC), Setu Mohta (NJC), Tan Rui Zhen (TJC), Yang Yan (HCJC) and Zhang Yang (RJC). Prof Lai Choy Heng, Dean, Faculty of Science was the Guest-of-Honour at the prize presentation held on 9 December 2000.


12th Singapore Physics Olympiad Competition 1999

The Twelfth Olympiad, jointly organised by IPS, NUS and MOE, was held on 27 October and 6 November 1999. It drew 141 contestants from 13 junior colleges. Raffles Junior College won the Challenge Trophy and 5 Gold Medals were awarded to Chen Jingye (RJC), Ng Wee Hao (HJC), Kwa Chin Lum (RJC), Tan Chee Hau (RJC) and Teh Yik Chuan (AJC). Mr Peter Chen, Senior Minister of State for Education, was the Guest-of-Honour at the prize presentation held on 11 December 1999.
