SPS, ΣΠΣ & IPS

Since 11 November 2011, the NUS Physics Department has established the American Institute of Physics' (AIP) Society of Physics Students (SPS) and Sigma Pi Sigma (ΣΠΣ) Fraternity Chapters:

  • AIP, Society of Physics Students, SPS Chapter: Dr. Cindy Ng Shao Chin
  • AIP, Sigma Pi Sigma, ΣΠΣ Chapter: A/Prof. Phil Chan Aik Hui

1) Society of Physics Students (SPS, AIP)

SPS (not to be confused with Special Programme in Science) is a professional association explicitly designed for students. Membership, through collegiate chapters, is open to anyone interested in physics. The only requirement for membership is that you be interested in physics. Besides physics majors, our members include majors in chemistry, computer science, engineering, geology, mathematics, medicine, and other fields. All second year NUS physics-major students are encouraged to seek membership into the SPS. To become a member of SPS, you need to:

  1. pay a membership fee of US$30 (S$45) per year;
  2. fill up the application form, downloadable here.

All qualified members will receive an AIP-SPS Certificate, a Physics Today (monthly) and other journals, and will be eligible for SPS scholarships and other awards. For more information, kindly visit their official website, http://www.spsnational.org/. Students who are interested in joining the SPS can hand in their applications directly to Dr Cindy or through Physoc. In either cases, please send them an e-mail to make an appointment to hand in your applications.

2) Sigma Pi Sigma (ΣΠΣ, AIP)

Sigma Pi Sigma exists to:

  • honor outstanding scholarship in physics;
  • encourage interest in physics among students at all levels;
  • promote an attitude of service of its members towards their fellow students, colleagues, and the public; and
  • provide a fellowship of persons who have excelled in physics.

Sigma Pi Sigma's mission is not completed in the induction ceremony with the recognition of academic accomplishment. In the four dimensions of Honor, Encouragement, Service, and Fellowship, the mission of Sigma Pi Sigma takes a longer view. All third year NUS physics-major students with outstanding scholarship, i.e. GPA of 3.5 and above, are encouraged to seek election into the ΣΠΣ honor fraternity. Honours, Masters, and PhD students may also apply for ΣΠΣ Election.

The application should be accompanied by the completed SPS form above, the one-time membership fee and a recommendation letter from a faculty member (in a sealed envelope). The membership fee is US$25 (S$35) for existing members of SPS, US$45 (S$65) for new members. This Election is for life and there are no annual dues to ΣΠΣ. All qualified members will receive an AIP ΣΠΣ Certificate, a ΣΠΣ pin, and subscriptions to Radiations Magazine.

For more information, kindly visit their official website, http://www.sigmapisigma.org/. Students who are not Physics majors but have made substantial contributions to the NUS Physics Society may be admitted to the Sigma Pi Sigma honor fraternity. Students who are interested in joining the ΣΠΣ can hand in their applications directly to A/Prof Phil Chan or through Physoc. In either cases, please send them an e-mail to make an appointment to hand in your applications.

3) Institute of Physics (IPS)

NUS Students who have already received their Physics Honors (all class), MSc or PhD degrees may also seek election into IPS membership. A photocopy of your NUS Honours degree scroll and S$60 (inclusive of administrative charges) should accompany the application form. Life membership is S$300. Elected IPS members will receive an IPS Diploma and may use the following Designatory Letters behind their BSc Hons degree.

For more information, kindly visit their official website, http://www.physics.nus.edu.sg/~phyips/membership.html. Students who are interested to be a member of IPS are to send in their applications to IPS personally.
