Physics Enrichment Camp 2017

9 June 2017


Physics Enrichment Camp (PEC) 2017 has came to and end on 9 June 2017. It is an annual Physics outreach programme targeted at Secondary School and Junior College students. A wide variety of activities include:

1. Highly entertaining lectures and live demonstrations by our faculty staff.
2. Research/teaching lab tours where students peek into the working principles behind state-of-the-art instruments and utilities of research centres such as Centre for Ion Beam Applications (CIBA) and Centre for Quantum Technologies (CQT).
3. Interactive hands-on activities, designed by student members of the NUS Physics Society, that aim to illuminate Physics concepts and their interesting applications.

Our deepest appreciation goes to staff and student organisers of PEC 2017, including Dr. Nidhi Sharma, Mr. Samuel Wu Tong Meng, Mr Lim Geok Quee and PEC Director Mu Young Kim. We thank all lecturers, experiment and student guides who are paramount to the success of the event. Special thanks also to photographers Seah ZongLong and Clarence Liu. Most of all, we thank you students for your keen participation in this outreach programme and hope you find PEC 2017 both fun and enriching!

New Physics Shirt

The long-awaited new Physics shirt is now available for purchase!

As you, Physics undergraduate, may have guessed, the design was inspired by our Physics Department lecturer, Dr. Wang Qinghai. We thank him for being so sporting to have donned on the shirt for our publicity. We also like to thank Park Kun Hee (Year 2 Physics Major) for creating most part of the design.

For those who have pre-ordered, we have reserved the sizes of your choice. Drop by Physics Society room at S13-M-06 to collect them now! If you are interested in purchasing the Spherical Cat shirts, we regret to inform that there are only blue ones left with limited sizes. (Opening hours from 10.00am to 6.00pm are subject to the Management Committee members' availability.)

Halloween

27 October 2016

On 27th and 28th October, Science Club organised its annual Halloween event for the Faculty of Science (FoS). Student-led clubs and society under FoS were invited to set up booths along the walkway near the newly opened Science Student’s Hub. The theme for this year’s Halloween was ‘The Last Train’, inspired by the well-received movie ‘Train to Busan’. Apart from the manning of booths, areas around our familiar campus were given a temporary facelift to create an atmosphere befitting of the event.

NUS Physics Society is organizing a Physics Orientation Camp (POC) this year for all the potential Physics freshmen! The details are listed below:

Title - The Determinator
Date - 13th-15th July 2016 (Wed - Fri), 3D2N camp
Fee - $28 (early bird sign ups) / $30 (after 30 May)

Why should you sign up for POC'16?
The camp will be a great avenue for you to interact with your other fellow like-minded freshies and make new friends. Additionally, you can expect great fun and games throughout the camp, mixed with an engaging storyline! Your seniors will also be interacting with you and sharing their experiences and advice on life as a physics major in NUS! They will also come back on the day of NUS module bidding to assist you with the confusing bidding process. Lastly, it doubles up for networking with seniors who will be able to guide you when you need help with physics.

"Your Race is among one of the few that have been called upon by the Intergalactic Union to retrieve the lost Artifact known as "the Determinator". It will be no easy task. You will be expected to pass stringent tests of ability, escape from challenging situations, solve intricate riddles and venture through the vast uncharted Space. Only then can you hope to find the whereabouts of the Artifact, retrieve it safely, and bring glory to your Race. Yet, nobody knows how the future will unfold, and surprises may await you..."

Physics Enrichment Camp 2016

Targeted at secondary and junior college-level students, the Physics Enrichment Camp primarily aims to instil an interest in Physics amongst the students through providing a highly interactive learning experience. A wide variety of activities include:

- Highly entertaining lectures by our faculty staff, commonly accompanied by captivating live demonstrations.

- Research lab tours where students gain a rich insight into the research work by Centre for Advanced 2D materials, Centre for Quantum Technologies (CQT), Centre for Ion Beam Applications (CIBA), etc.

- Teaching lab tours where students can learn the principles of laser, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and discover some of the experiments that are part of our Physics undergraduate curriculum.

- Students also get to experience interactive hands-on activities, conducted by NUS Physics majors (a few non-Physics majors too), that aim to illuminate Physics concepts and their interesting applications.

This year's PEC has been a success owing to the dedication of many NUS staff and student helpers. In particular, Physoc Committee Members together with staff of Physics Department have invested commendable efforts in the planning of PEC 2016. We also like to thank all Secondary School and Junior College participants of PEC for their kind support and keen attitude towards exploring Physics. Above all, we hope the experience had been an eye-opener and an inspiration to the young and curious!

Chinese New Year 2016, Steamboat Dinner

In the coming 2016 Chinese New Year festival, Physoc is organising a steamboat dinner open to all staff and students of the Physics department.

Steamboat dinners are traditionally a gesture of reuniting. Through this event, Physoc offers the warmth of company, the resonance of laughter and dearly hopes to promote the interaction of staff and students. Physics T-Shirt Design Competition 2015

The annual NUS Physics Society T-Shirt Design Competition is here again! Display your creativity through this opportunity to express what Physics means to you.

Simply send in your original designs with the following requirements:

Mid Autumn Festival Celebration 2015

Physics Induction Workshop 2015

Welcome back to a fresh new semester! Here's wishing everyone a great year ahead!

We are starting off the semester with the annual Physics Induction Workshop, which will be held in LT31 on 12th August (Wed), from 2.10 - 5.10 pm. The Physics Induction Workshop is organised to guide freshmen on how to maximize their learning experience here in NUS Physics. There will be notable faculty members speaking on various topics. Do come on down to join us in answering important questions such as:
1) How to approach physics problems?
2) What are the NUS resources and opportunities to enhance your physics education?
and many others. Refreshment will be provided for the event.

The workshop is compulsory for all physics freshmen. However, we would strongly encourage Year 2 and 3 students to attend the workshop as well.

  • The Management Committee functions as a whole and members should expect to help out for most of the events.

Past Year Paper Database Updated

Once again, the examination season looms by on the horizon. It is the time for mugging and of course, practicing past year exam papers. Did you know that the NUS Physics Society maintains a database of past year exam questions and solutions at

A dedicated team is in the midst of revamping and updating the solution database. The updated solutions are highlighted in yellow and have been verified by NUS Physics alumni. Currently, the solutions that have been updated are: PC1143 AY12/13 and PC1143 AY13/14. Of course, the solutions for the exams from the various other physics modules and years are still available as well, and these will be updated in due course.

We hope that these solutions will prove useful to you in your exam preparations, and we wish you all the best in the upcoming examinations!



Physics Enrichment Camp 2015 Helper Recruitment

The Physics Department is currently recruiting helpers for the Physics Enrichment Camp 2015. The Physics Enrichment Camp is an annual day camp for secondary and JC students. It aims to instill an interest in and appreciation of Physics among the students through providing a highly interactive and wonderful learning experience.

If you are looking for something meaningful and engaging to do during the summer break or want to inspire youths through fun and exciting activities, then wait no further: sign up as a helper for the Physics Enrichment Camp today at

There will a total of four sessions available - on the 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th of June, and you may choose to help out on any one or more of the days. Helpers will be remunerated at an attractive rate of S$50/day, and breakfast and lunch will also be provided.

Do note that:
(1) There will be a briefing held on 12th May (Tues).
(2) There will be a trial run of the activities in the week before the actual event (to be held some time between 2 - 5 June).
