Video of the Week |
Week 3 (02/02/2015 - 09/02/2015)Secret of Snapping Spaghetti in SLOW MOTION by SmarterEveryDay
Most of you will probably have eaten eaten spaghetti before - but have you ever tried snapping uncooked spaghetti sticks into half? What is so interesting about that? Well, you will find that, counter-intuitively, they will always break into three or more pieces! Why is that so?
Apparently, the answer is not trivial! Research conducted on this phenomenon was actually awarded the Ig Nobel prize in 2006. In this week's video, we feature Destin from the popular science video channel Smarter Every Day, as he tries to explain this mind-boggling observation in layman terms from both theoretical and experimental perspectives. Perhaps, the next time you eat spaghetti, it will be a totally different experience.
The Video of the Week is a newly introduced feature. Each week, we will highlight a new physics-related video. The selected videos will cover a wide variety of issues, ranging from academic to pedagogical or even introspective in nature. Through these videos, we hope to inspire students, broaden the horizons of their physics knowledge and stimulate thinking and reflection. Stay tuned for more exciting videos in the coming weeks!
