Video of the Week |
Week 8 (16/03/2015 - 23/03/2015)Sparks from Falling Water: Kelvin's Thunderstorm by Veritasium
In this week's featured video, Derek from Veritasium will showcase a new power-generating machine that promises to resolve the energy crisis of future generations to come by making use of only droplets of water. Sounds too good to be true? What is the catch?
Known as the Kelvin Thunderstorm, or alternatively, the Kelvin Water Dropper, this machine is able to separate positive and negative charges of falling water droplets using a positive feedback process. Originally invented by Lord Kelvin more than a century ago, this interesting machine is probably not very well known - and the reason why can be found in this video. Enjoy!
The Video of the Week is a newly introduced feature. Each week, we will highlight a new physics-related video. The selected videos will cover a wide variety of issues, ranging from academic to pedagogical or even introspective in nature. Through these videos, we hope to inspire students, broaden the horizons of their physics knowledge and stimulate thinking and reflection. Stay tuned for more exciting videos in the coming weeks!
