Professor Watt is the Director, Centre for Ion Beam Applications (CIBA). In this capacity, he leads the CIBA group and mentors numerous PhD candidates, young Postdocs and also demonstrates leadership for younger physics colleagues. Under his very dedicated and outstanding leadership, CIBA has also done excellent research in Biophysics, Medical Physics and Engineering physics. 2) IPS World Scientific Medal :
Assoc. Professor Scarani has conducted excellent research in Quantum Cryptography, Quantum Entanglement, Non-locality and Theoretical assessment for experimental groups. 3) Omicron Nanotechnology Medal:
Asst. Professor Ariando has done outstanding Nanotechnology research, namely, to explore heterostructure, supperlattices, or/and quantum wells between various epitaxial films, both from a fundamental as well as device-oriented viewpoint. 4) IPS Cadi Scientific Medal:
From 1995 to 2009, Dr. Chew was the Chief Executive of the Singapore Science Centre (SSC). Under his committed, creative and outstanding leadership, SSC was transformed into an innovative world-class educational facility with a visitorship in excess of one million per annum. 5) IPS Crescendas Medal (High School):
Although trained as an engineer, Mr. Yap is an outstanding teacher at Tanjong Katong Girls' School, known for lively physics lessons that are of an interactive nature. 6) IPS Crescendas Medal (Junior College):

2009 IPS Medallists 1) The IPS President's Medal
Professor Tang Seung Mun made outstanding contributions in leadership when he was NUS Head of Physics Department. He was also an outstanding physics researcher at the Centre for Ion Beam Applications, CIBA, while in the National University of Singapore. Professor Tang is currently the Vice President of Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. 2) The World Scientific (Physics Research) Medal and Prize (Quantum Physics Research)
Professor Vedral Vlatko from Wolfson College, Oxford University, received the IPS World Scientific Medal, for outstanding contributions to Quantum Information research done at the National University Singapore that has received international recognition. He is also Centenary Professor of Quantum Information Science at Leeds University. 3) The Omicron Nanotechnology Medal and Prize (Nanotechnology Physics Research)
Assistant Professor Chen Wei has done outstanding physics research in molecular electronics, organic electronics and graphene-related devices at the National University Singapore and has received international recognition. He was also a Lee Kuan Yew Postdoctoral Research Fellow. 4) The Crescendas Physics Medal and Prize (Junior College)
An outstanding and innovative physics teacher, Mr. Tan Hoe Teck has given Catholic Junior College students greater value-added scientific opportunities and exposure to physics skills through regular Astronomy field trips. CJC is the only junior college that owns an amateur radio telescope in Singapore.
Mrs. Loh is an outstanding physics teacher with vast experience (a physics teacher since 1998) in teaching Physics at Hwa Chong Institution. She is an excellent leader in the pedagogies of physics education. Her philosophy of creative teaching and engaged physics learning has won her the respect of her fellow physics lecturers and students at HCI. 5) The Cadi Scientific Medal and Prize: The Public Awareness of Physics Award
Mr. Yeh Ong Chua and Mr. Lim Sin Hoe were outstanding in promoting physics through Astronomy. Trinity College, Cambridge, United Kingdom 2008 IPS Medallists 1) The IPS President's Medal Prof. Andrew Wee (NUS) Currently the Dean of Science Faculty, NUS, Prof. Wee has demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities in his capacity as the President Elect of the Institute of Physics, Singapore for 6 years from 2001-2007, and was the former head of the NUS Physics Department. He has published more than 300 internationally refereed scientific papers. Prof. Wee is currently an Elected Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Physics (IPS) and Institute of Physics (IoP), UK. 2) The World Scientific (Physics Research) Medal and Prize Asst. Prof. Chen Ping (NUS) Asst. Prof. Chen has conducted outstanding research in hydrogen storage. This important discovery has caused a stir in the international scientific community, offering the world a possible solution to global warming and its search for a clean and renewable energy. 3) The Omicron Nanotechnology Medal and Prize (Nanotechnology Physics Research) Prof. Kuok Meng Hau (NUS) Prof. Kuok has made outstanding research contributions in the areas of magnetic and mechanical properties of low-dimensional structures using inelastic laser-light scattering spectroscopy, spin dynamics of patterned nanomagnetic media, nanomagnetism, nanoacoustics of porous silicon and photonic crystals. 4) The Crescendas Physics Medal and Prize (Secondary School / Junior College) Mr Yip Cheng Hou (Boon Lay Secondary School) An outstanding and innovative teacher, Mr. Yip has given Boon Lay pupils greater value-added scientific opportunities and exposure to physics skills so that they can excel in Physics examinations. 45 % of his students scored a distinction and 100 % passes in the 2007 Physics ‘O’ level examinations. Mr Chan Soo Heong, Julius (Victoria Junior College) Outstanding Physics teacher with vast experience (since 1985) in teaching Physics at Victoria Junior College. He is an excellent pedagogical leader in physics education. His philosophy of inspirational teaching, engaged learining has won the respect of his fellow physics lecturers and his students at Victoria JC. Mr Julius Chan also posseses excellent administrative skills in the VJC physics department. 5) The Cadi Scientific Medal and Prize: The Public Awareness of Physics Award Prof. Xu Shuyan (NIE) Prof. Xu was outstanding in promoting physics in Singapore and to the world by hosting the 37th International Physics Olympiad, 8-17th July 2006. He led an organising team in this event, which saw a total of 4 Nobel Prize winners and 1 Templeton Laureate, and some 800 participating competitors, leaders and officials from 86 countries taking part in this event. 6) The Honorary IPS Fellowship Award Prof. Jocelyn Bell Burnell Discoverer of neutron stars & first female British physicist awarded the IPS Distinguished Honorary Fellowship Award Distinguished Visitor's Lecture at the National University of Singapore, 29th February 2008 by Professor Jocelyn Bell Burnell on Pulsar Stars. Jointly organised by the British High Commission, Singapore, IPS and NUS. Prof. Bell's lecture was enthusiastically received by a 600-strong audience comprising students. In the above photograph, she gamely posed for photographs after the event with budding astronomers from Hwa Chong Institution and Raffles Junior College. 2007 IPS Medallists 1) The IPS President's Medal Prof. Lim Hock (National University of Singapore) was awarded The IPS President's Medal. From 1987 to 1993, he was involved in the setting up and development of the Laboratory for Image and Signal Processing (LISP), with MINDEF funding (LISP evolved into CRISP in 1993). Image restoration research conducted at LISP won student the Defence Technology Prize 1993. From 1990 to 1993, he was instrumental in the development and coordination of the Computational Science Programme in the Faculty of Science. Prof. Lim was also involved in the establishment and development of the Centre for Remote Imaging, Sensing and Processing (CRISP), with funding from A*STAR (known as NSTB then). CRISP won the Excellence for Singapore Award 1999. From 2000 till today, he is involved in the setting up and development of the Temasek Laboratories with funding from the DSTA. He was awarded the Defence Technology Prize (Individual, R&D Category) in 2003. 2) The World Scientific (Physics Research) Medal and Prize Prof. Li Baowen (National University of Singapore) was awarded The World Scientific Medal and Prize. He has made seminal contributions in the understanding the microscopic mechanisms of heat conduction in one-dimensional systems. In 2004 and 2005, Li and his collaborators at NUS proposed the building thermal rectifier/diode by coupling two nonlinear lattices. In 2006, they worked out a model for a thermal transistor, following a finding of negative differential thermal resistance in the thermal rectifier/diode model. The thermal rectifier has been realised experimentally in 2006 by a group at Berkeley. 3) The Omicron Nanotechnology Medal and Prize (Nanotechnology Physics Research) Asst. Prof. Jeroen van Kan from the National University of Singapore's CIBA group was awarded The Omicron Medal and Prize for excellent research in Nanotechnology. His seminal research contributions are in the fields of nanolithography, nano-imprinting, nanoscience and technology, molecular electronics and devices. 4) The Crescendas Physics Medal and Prize (Secondary School / Junior College) Ms. Ho Siew Chong (Anderson Junior College) was awarded the Crescendas Physics Medal and Prize. As an experienced and dedicated Physics teacher, she has been helping the students to excel in their field of studies, offering various opportunities to stretch their potential. Many students have benefited from her teaching and are inspired by her to further their education and research in related fields. Always looking for ways to improve, she encourages teachers in her department to seek improvements in their pedagogy and better their teaching through formation of Learning Circles and Action Research teams. Ms Ho has made significant contributions in promoting a strong science research culture in Anderson JC. Mr. Mark Wee Chye Huat (Raffles Institution) was awarded the Crescendas Physics Medal and Prize. Mark has proven himself to be a first-class Physics teacher, well loved by all his students. He frequently teaches physics as a way of thinking, promoting critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. A reflective teacher who is aware of his students’ different learning styles, Mark is able to reach out to students of different abilities through the varied examples, stories and problem situations he brings into the classroom. His students speak fondly of him, of how effective he is, of his love for the subject, and how they have been inspired by him. 5) The Cadi Scientific Medal and Prize: The Public Awareness of Physics Award Dr. Pang Kian Tiong was awarded the Cadi Scientific Medal and Prize for his outstanding contributions in organising Einstein's 2005 Centennial Celebration. As a resident scientist at The Singapore Science Centre, he has contributed much in his several years of experience in communicating physics to the general public. 6) The Honorary IPS Fellowship Award
2006 IPS Medallists 1) The IPS President’s Award by the IPS Council Professor Phua Kok Khoo, the founding Director of the Institute of Advanced Studies, NTU, is awarded The IPS President's Medal for outstanding contributions to physics research & education in Singapore. He has also put Singapore on the world map of Scientific Publishing through establishing the international company, World Scientific Co. Ptd. Ltd. 2) IPS Premier Award (Physics Research) Assoc. Professor Kwek Leong Chuan of NIE is awarded The World Scientific Medal and Prize for outstanding research in Quantum Information and Computing, and the prime mover in setting up the 1 st Quantum Information lab. in NUS Physics Department. 3) IPS Nanotechnology Award (Nanotechnology Physics Research) Assist. Professor Sow Chorng Haur is awarded The Omicron Medal and Prize for excellent research in Nanotechnology, in particular Hybrid Carbon Nanotube material that allows ultrafast nonlinear optical switching done in the NUS Physics Department. 4) IPS Physics Education Awards The Outstanding Physics Teacher, J. College The Outstanding Physics Teacher, Sec. School 5) IPS Public Awareness of Physics Award Assoc. Professorial Fellow Chia Teck Chee is awarded The Cadi Scientific Medal and Prize for being an outstanding science educator by providing inspiration to numerous batches of physics trainee teachers at the National Institute of Education, NIE. Many of his students have gone on to inspire numerous physics students in schools, junior colleges, polytechnics and the public.
