  • The course notes, lectures, and weekly worksheets are designed to work together. The notes provide the main content, while the worksheets highlight important ideas, give you opportunities to apply them, and help identify areas that need further attention.

  • For each topic, I will clearly indicate whether you should:

    • read or attempt something before the lecture;
    • use the material during the lecture; or
    • work through it after the lecture to consolidate your understanding.
  • Sometimes I will release notes before a lecture so that you can arrive with some familiarity with the topic. For other topics, I will introduce the ideas first and ask you to study the notes afterwards.

  • Lectures will not reproduce every part of the notes. I will concentrate on the central concepts, difficult reasoning, common misconceptions, and examples that benefit from discussion. You remain responsible for working through the assigned material, including relevant parts that are not discussed in detail during lectures.

  • A useful weekly routine is:

    1. Follow the preparation instructions given for that week.
    2. Attend the lecture and note which ideas remain unclear.
    3. Work worksheet together in class and revisit them outside along with the notes.
    4. Review errors and explain the underlying ideas in your own words.
    5. Ask for help when something remains unclear.
  • The priority in this course is conceptual understanding, not simply memorising facts or completing topics quickly. You should be able to explain how and why a result follows, recognise the assumptions involved, and apply the underlying ideas in unfamiliar situations.

  • Your questions will help shape the pace and emphasis of the course. Often, I will adjust the worksheet content to explain challenging topics.

  • Please ask (during class, question-box, email, office hours) whenever something is unclear or when an idea would benefit from being explained in another way.
