| 1 | Hi Prof. Chammika, I noticed that only Chapter 1 notes are currently uploaded under Topics tab. Would it be possible to have lecture notes for all the chapters to be covered uploaded in advance? I personally find it helpful to understand the overall structure of the course at an early stage of the semester and identify any topics I may want to review/preview beforehand so I can better follow the lectures. I would greatly appreciate it if you could consider allowing us to access the future lecture notes. Thank you! |
Thank you for writing in. I can release most of the lecture notes in advance, with the caveat that I may revise them before covering the relevant material in class. I usually have about a year between iterations of the course to update the notes. However, as the course moved to Semester 1 this year, I was unable to make all the changes I had planned. |

| This question concerns the behaviour of neutrons inside a neutron star. We know that an isolated neutron decays to a proton, electron and anti electron neutrino with a half life of 15 mins. Inside the core of a very massive star in the final moments before the star explodes, does extreme gravitational pressure and intense energy in the environment force the reverse reaction to happen? And what stabilized the neutrons in the environment of a neutron star, preventing the decay from proceeding | Thank you for this question! There is a process called electron-capture (EC) that gobbles up an atomic electron to convert a proton into a neutron. Interestingly, you do not have to have exotice situations like neutron stars for this to occur; it is common-place with your everyday nucle! It is trivial to understand why the neutron cannot decay inside a nucleus by looking at (a more humbler) nuclues like deuteron. Let’s do this as an exercise this Friday! |

| I wanted to ask you if you also make your notes available as a pdf? I enjoy learning by adding my own handwritten notes to the lecture notes on my tablet. However, I have not yet been able to import your notes (from the lecture website or perusell) into my note app. Thank you for your help. | I am sorry, my notes are not yet set up to render directly into PDF. When needed, I print them as PDFs, which is not ideal but should woro okay. |
